National Arboretum Canberra Launches 'Nature Playgroup' Program
The National Arboretum Canberra is excited to announce the launch of its new 'Nature Playgroup' program, a weekly nature-based playgroup designed to foster a deep connection between young children and the natural world. Facilitated by the Arboretum’s experienced outdoor educators, these sessions offer a holistic approach to childhood development, encouraging exploration, creativity, and a lifelong love of the environment.
A New Way to Play and Learn
Nature Playgroup is designed for children aged 18 months to 5 years, along with their carers, providing a welcoming space where little ones can explore the wonders of the natural world. The program runs on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 12 pm during school terms (excluding public holidays).
Each session is held in the peaceful serenity of an Arboretum forest, where children can engage in imaginative play, develop their motor skills, and build physical and emotional confidence. Whether they’re experimenting with earth and water, climbing trees, or participating in role-play, children gain valuable life skills that extend beyond the classroom.
“Our aim is to nurture a sense of wonder, guide without imposing, create space for possibilities, and facilitate safe exploration and learning in the natural world,” said Bianca, Outdoor Educator at the National Arboretum.
“We believe in sowing the seeds of a deep and lasting connection with the natural environment. Our playgroup is designed to be an explorative journey, providing a foundation for children to become confident, caring, and environmentally conscious individuals.”
Seasonal Changes and Practical Information
The Nature Playgroup is a seasonal program, with locations and activities changing throughout the year to reflect the natural shifts in the environment.
As this is an outdoor-only event, the playgroup will run in most weather conditions, with cancellations occurring only in extreme weather. In the event of a cancellation, tickets can be transferred to another session of your choice.
