From Old Timber to New Purpose: Arboretum Decking Finds a Second Life

A routine infrastructure upgrade at the National Arboretum Canberra has become a wonderful example of sustainability, craftsmanship and community collaboration.

After more than a decade of service, the timber decking at the Village Centre had reached the end of its usable life. Rather than sending the material to landfill, the Arboretum donated the reusable timber to the Belconnen Community Men’s Shed, where volunteers saw an opportunity to give it a new purpose.

Over several weeks, the reclaimed timber was carefully transformed into a beautifully crafted picnic setting. Once complete, the finished piece was returned to the Arboretum and installed on the Events Terrace, where visitors can now gather, relax and enjoy the spectacular surroundings.

The project demonstrates the value of keeping materials in use for longer, reducing waste while creating something meaningful for the community. What makes the outcome especially rewarding is that the Arboretum simply donated the timber for reuse, with no expectation of what it might become. The Men’s Shed volunteers chose to return it as a functional picnic area, creating an unexpected and welcome legacy.

Meanwhile, visitors can once again enjoy the Village Centre deck, which has been fully replaced using sustainably sourced spotted gum hardwood. Chosen for its durability and natural beauty, the new deck complements the Arboretum's distinctive landscape and architecture while providing a refreshed space for visitors to enjoy.

The project highlights how even everyday maintenance works can deliver positive environmental and social outcomes. By partnering with a local community organisation, materials that still had value were kept out of landfill and given a meaningful second life and the Arboretum has been continues to look for future opportunities to contribute to sustainability and the community.

What was once part of the Village Centre deck now serves a new purpose, creating a space for visitors to gather, relax and make new memories for years to come.
