Painters capture the Autumn Arboretum: Inaugural Capital Plein Air Festival brings a creative flourish to Canberra

The National Arboretum Canberra came alive with colour and creativity during the inaugural Capital Plein Air Festival 2025, held over the ANZAC Day long weekend from 25-27 April. Artists from across Australia gathered, with a shared passion for the timeless art of painting en plein air (outdoors), capturing the landscape, weather and vibrant autumn colour directly from life, surrounded by the glowing red and golden hues of Canberra’s autumn.

The Arboretum, with its sweeping views, curated forests, and interesting Discovery Gardens, served as the perfect canvas for this outdoor art celebration. From seasoned professionals to enthusiastic beginners, participants immersed themselves in the natural beauty of the site, painting under open skies and among the rustling leaves.

A variety of events featured at the Arboretum Festival Hub, including live demonstrations from the festivals' featured artist Leon Holmes, artist talks with renowned landscape painter and special guest Warwick Fuller, and the exciting Quick Draw competition held on the Arboretum’s Event Terrace. The competition challenged artists to create a finished piece in just 2 hours, culminating in a lively awards ceremony that showcased the diversity and talent of the plein air community. Visitors were able to take home art freshly painted from the 'Wet Wall', a beautiful memento of their visit, and showing support to Australia's talented artists.

More than just a painting event, the Capital Plein Air Festival fostered connection between artists, nature, and the public. Visitors were invited to enjoy art exhibitions in the Visitors Centre & the Terrace Room, as well as watch the creative process unfold, engaging live with artists, and even try their hand at painting.

As the sun set on this first edition, the festival left behind not only beautiful artworks but also a renewed appreciation for the landscapes that inspire them. With its successful debut, the Capital Plein Air Festival is set to become a cherished annual tradition in Canberra’s cultural calendar.
