To showcase Australia’s national floral emblem, 120 Golden Wattle seedlings were donated by the Wattle Day Association. These were planted in May 2018, by Wattle Day Association members, Friends of the Arboretum and volunteers in a small understory garden beneath eucalypts near Forest 2.

The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) is native to south eastern Australia. One of more than 1000 acacia species found only in Australia, Acacia pycnantha became Australia’s national floral emblem in 1988.

Seed for this planting was collected from Mt Jerrabomberra, close to where Charles Weston, Canberra’s first Chief Re-forestation Officer, collected botanical specimens in 1917.

Funds raised will support future Arboretum projects.
