Stephen Cullum Joins NBPCA as Bonsai Artist in Residence

The National Bonsai & Penjing Collection of Australia (NBPCA) was delighted to welcome Stephen Cullum from Queensland as our latest Artist in Residence. With over 35 years of bonsai experience, Stephen has become a respected figure in the Australian bonsai community, particularly known for his dedication to exploring the natural aesthetics of broadleaf bonsai.

Stephen’s passion for native species has led him to work with more than 180 Australian native trees, a journey captured in his newly published book, Australian Native Bonsai. His innovative approach and deep understanding of native flora have made a significant impact on the evolving art of bonsai in Australia.

During his residency, Stephen generously shared his expertise with the NBPCA team, assisting with the maintenance of our refined deciduous trees and contributing to the ongoing care and development of the Collection. His visit also included an inspiring presentation, a live demonstration, and a series of hands-on workshops tailored for our dedicated bonsai volunteers.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Stephen for his time, knowledge, and enthusiasm. His contributions have left a lasting impression on the Collection and our bonsai volunteer community.
