Bush Inspired Bonsai: Matt Sharp brings a uniquely Australian perspective to the National Arboretum’s Bonsai Residency
This autumn, the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia (NBPCA) welcomed South Australian bonsai artist Matt Sharp as part of its prestigious Bonsai Artist in Residence Program. Known for his passion for unconventional species and his deep-rooted connection to the Australian landscape, Matt brought a fresh perspective throughout his visit.
With over 30 years of experience, Matt has honed his skills working with hardy, often overlooked species like feral Olives, Plums, and Desert Ash trees growing in Adelaide’s challenging climate. More recently, he’s turned his attention to Australian natives, cultivating species such as Black Box, Sticky Hop Bush, and Callitris from seed to reflect the rugged beauty of the bush.
During his residency, Matt collaborated with NBPCA staff and volunteers, sharing his knowledge through workshops and discussions. His easy going teaching style and enthusiasm for bonsai made a lasting impression.
Matt’s residency wasn’t just about teaching, it was also a chance to learn. He immersed himself in the Collection, exchanging ideas with curators and exploring new techniques and species less common in his home state. He also collaborated with staff trimming the Japanese Black Pine Niwaki (garden trees) that stand proudly in front of the Collection. As president of the South Australian Bonsai Society, Matt plans to bring these insights back to his community, enriching the Adelaide bonsai scene.
Reflecting on his time at the Arboretum, Matt emphasised the importance of developing a uniquely Australian approach, stating that now is the time to "concentrate on creating an Australian flavour of bonsai".
Matt’s visit was a celebration of diversity in bonsai, of both species and styles, and a reminder that beauty can be found in even the most unexpected places.
The National Bonsai and Penjing Collection supported by the Bonsai Trust Fund proudly host the Bonsai Artist in Residence Program each year.
