Care and Enhancement of Exisiting Forests
The National Arboretum Canberra’s forests form one of the world’s most significant living tree collections. This sponsorship directly supports the care, resilience and long‑term sustainability of the Living Collection as a whole.
Because horticultural needs vary across the year and species, sponsorship funds are applied where they have the greatest impact within the Living Collection – ensuring every forest receives the care it needs, when it needs it.
Priority horticultural activities supported through sponsorship include:
- Mulching and soil care – large‑scale mulching to protect roots and retain moisture
- Irrigation and water management – efficient watering and essential system upkeep
- Pest and disease management – protecting rare and threatened species
- Pruning and canopy maintenance – maintaining tree health and safety
- Tree replacement and new plant establishment – sustaining resilience
- Forest signage and interpretation – enhancing visitor understanding of the collection
Your support helps secure the future of the Arboretum’s Living Collection for generations to come.
Future Forest Development Opportunities
The Arboretum has identified four future forest sites that will expand the living collection and support long‑term conservation and education goals. These projects offer high‑impact opportunities for sponsorship investment.
Proposed Forests
These forests will add new diversity and enhance the visitor experience once established:
- Forest 13: Geijera parviflora (Wilga)
- Forest 29: Podocarpus latifolius (Broad‑leaved Yellowwood)
- Forest 47: Brahea edulis (Guadalupe Palm)
- Forest 91: Taxodium mucronatum (Montezuma Cypress)
Investment
Estimated cost per forest: $400,000–$600,000. Projects are delivered through co‑funding, combining sponsor contributions with internal investment.
Timeframes
Species availability varies; some require specialised propagation and may take up to three years from ordering to planting.
Further details on species, timelines and next steps are available during project planning.
