Papua New Guinea - Silver Ash

On Tuesday, 11 October 2011, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, the Hon. Peter O’Neill, joined the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Economic Development, Mr Andrew Barr, in planting a Silver ash (Flindersia schottiana) in the Central Valley of the National Arboretum Canberra.

Mr O’Neill’s ceremonial planting is another contribution to the diverse range of trees that are being planted by Prime Ministers, Presidents and Heads of State to build a spectacular ceremonial garden and forest setting.

The Silver ash is native to both Australia and Papua New Guinea. The tree will proudly stand alongside trees from Australia and around the world and symbolise the strong ties between our two nations.

Note: The original tree proved unsuitable for Canberra’s climate and was replaced in 2015 with a similar species, Flindersia australis (Crow’s ash).
