On Sunday 26th June, Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, joined with members of the ACT Committee of the National Boer War Memorial Association, distinguished guests from Diplomatic/Service Personnel; RSL/Ex Service Organisations; Regional Mayors; Federal Government representatives; National Arboretum Canberra Board and sponsors and Boer War descendants to plant Clanwilliam cedar trees at the National Arboretum in memory of the almost 1,000 Australian service men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice during the Boer War. While the war started in 1899 it did not finish until 31 May 1902, and it is fair to say that this conflict also saw the birth of the ANZAC tradition as some 23,000 Australians served alongside more than 6,000 New Zealanders.

Clanwilliam cedar are significant as they are on the brink of extinction in South Africa following years of unsustainable logging practices. Fortunately, staff at the Yarralumla Nursery has been able to cultivate the 25 centimetre seedlings and expect they will do very well at the Arboretum and grow to about seven metres.
