Hungary - Flowering Ash

Visit from Hungarian President

Mr Jon Stanhope, Chief Minister MLA and His Excellency Mr László Sólyom, President of the Republic of Hungary, planted a Fraxinus ornus, (Flowering Ash or Manna Ash) at the Arboretum on Wednesday, 30 September 2009.

The ceremonial tree planting took place on the spine of the Central Valley, which will accommodate trees planted by significant dignitaries and leaders.

The Central Valley will provide a sculpted landscape – a location for events, informal passive recreation and a setting for a children’s play space.

Fraxinus ornus (Flowering Ash or Manna Ash)

The Fraxinus ornus is a very attractive tree with dark green leaves and a compact, mop-shaped, round crown.  The dark green leaves can show some colourful red/orange autumn tints before falling and in early spring it has attractive creamy white, scented flowers. A fully grown Flowering Ash can reach 16m in height with a 13m spread.
