His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam – Windmill palm – 2 May 2013

On 2 May 2013, His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, joined the ACT Chief Minister Ms Katy Gallagher MLA in planting a Windmill palm, Trachycarpus fortunei, in the Central Valley of the National Arboretum Canberra.

The planting was the first ceremonial tree planting since the Arboretum was opened in February 2013, and the Windmill palm is the first of its kind to be planted at the Arboretum. Windmill palms have been cultivated for thousands of years for the strength of their leaf fibres, used in rope and cloth-making. Once mature, the Windmill palm, Trachycarpus fortunei, stands up to 20 metres tall on a single stem.
