All weather access at the National Arboretum Canberra
Almost 4km of internal roads within the National Arboretum will be sealed allowing all weather access to more forests for maintenance and heavy vehicles. Road works will start on the 20 September 2021.
Frequently closed after rain, the popular Cork Oak Road will be sealed allowing more people to access the walking trails within the National Arboretum regardless of the weather. An expanded car park will accommodate 30 cars at this popular launch point for walkers. Deek’s Drive and Totara Road in the southern forests and Depot Road will also be sealed.
During the construction periods, bikes, walkers and equestrians will still be able to access the internal network of trails and the Bicentennial National Trail. Some trails will be temporarily affected in these areas with signage indicating any closures.
Funding for the roads was received through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program phase 2. This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
