The National Arboretum offers unique indoor and outdoor venues for hire for a variety of functions and events:

  • The Village Centre main space
  • Margaret Whitlam Pavilion
  • The Green Room in the Village Centre
  • The Amphitheatre
  • The Bonsai Deck
  • The Events Terrace
  • The Terrace Room
  • Dairy Farmers Hill and other outdoor areas
  • We can usually organise a venue to suit your special event. Whether indoors or outdoors, most of our venues offer panoramic views over the Arboretum and Canberra.

    Meeting Rooms. There are three meeting room venues to choose from:

    1. The Margaret Whitlam Pavilion holds up to 80 guests theatre style and 120 cocktail style.
    2. The Green Room in the Village Centre holds up to 45 guests theatre style and 20 for board room style. This room may be booked directly through the Arboretum. Phone 6207 8484, email: arboretum@act.gov.au.
    3. The Terrace Room holds up to 60 guests theatre style and 100 cocktail style.

    Ginger Catering (chef Janet Jeffs) are the official caterers at the National Arboretum Canberra. They offer a range of menus and packages for events and functions, whether large or small.

    Booking fee covers venue access by negotiation, dependant on venue set up requirements. An additional hourly fee is payable if venue is not vacated by the hirer and their suppliers by midnight. Fee includes deck outside for pre-dinner drinks.

    Function space is presented as at time of booking and will require accommodating permanent interpretive displays, with additional costs for removal of these if required. No cost for removal of temporary displays.

    Venue hire rates for the low season winter months of June, July and August 2018 will be reduced by 20%.

    Venue hire rates for wedding receptions booked in the Village Centre on Monday-Thursday year round will be reduced by 20% (winter discount does not apply in addition).

    An additional mandatory charge for security applies to all wedding receptions and engagement parties in all venues $168 for the first four hours or part thereof, plus $42 per hour thereafter.

    Only available when Village Centre is not booked for functions. Restricted to northern end of the Village Centre and a maximum of 120 pax. On a trial basis to 31/12/2018 venue hire does not apply to breakfast events of less than 60 pax. An additional mandatory charge for security applies to all wedding receptions and engagement parties $168 for the first four hours or part thereof, plus $42 per hour thereafter (security rates valid to 31/12/18).

    Bonsai viewings after hours 4pm to 9pm

    The Terrace Room and Discovery Garden

    The Discovery Garden is accessible to the general public unless booked for exclusive use in conjunction with the Terrace Room.

    Margaret Whitlam Pavilion

    Weddings $1,100 for 2 hour wedding ceremony including audio system.

    Max 80 seated theatre style or 138 standing. Wedding flat rate includes use of in-house audio equipment. Additional AV may be ordered through the preferred supplier. Additional AV equipment for non-ceremony functions is available on request for an additional charge. Catering and other inclusions may be negotiated with Ginger Catering. Additional hours for catered functions, normal rates apply. Maximum 4hr charge between 5pm - Midnight. An additional mandatory charge for security applies to all catered wedding receptions and engagement parties at a 2016 rate of $168 for the first four hours or part thereof, plus $42 per hour thereafter.     Cost recovery of the fee charged by the Security Company to release visitors who fail to comply with the gate closure regime.

    Booking and Cancellations Policy

    • Deposits are required as specified and are payable upon signing a venue hire agreement.
    • To provide certainty of pricing to customers the event price will be based on prices applicable in the year in which the event is to be held. The deposit will be deducted from the final event price at settlement, which will be no later than seven days prior to the event.
    • All cancellations must be made in writing.
    • The cancellation policy does not apply to small events involving less than 10 people or where an event is postponed and rescheduled by the hirer. However, the deposit or full event payment price will only be applied to a rescheduled venue event where a minimum of thirty (30) days notice is given. Rescheduling is subject to venue availability. The rescheduling conditions apply to a venue hire/event being rescheduled for one time only within a three (3) month period. .
    • Subject to conditions outlined in the Booking Policy, if the event is cancelled by the Arboretum, at no fault of the hirer, the deposit or full venue price will be refunded.
    • To protect assets, monetary bonds may be sought for some events. The monetary value of the bond will be determined in accordance with a risk analysis for that event.

    Discounting of Fees

    Private or public use of a venue for which entry/participation fees are charged will normally be subject to the full fee as above. Waiving or discounting of fees may occur in the following circumstances. In all cases where venue hire fees are waived or discounted, the Arboretum may nonetheless charge the approved Event Supervision, Facilitation and Planning fee where appropriate to meet some or all costs incurred.

    • The proponent is providing a public even free of charge to participants and the event is actively supported and promoted by the Arboretum as part of its public events program.
      This includes free performances, demonstrations, workshops and other activities.
    • The proponent is the Friends of the Arboretum, Bonsai Collection Advisory Committee, the Southern Tablelands Ecosystem Park, Ginger Catering or the Curatoreum and the purpose of the venue hire is either a staff/volunteer meeting or training session or a public event that is either free or, if ticketed, 100% of revenue is returned to the Arboretum. This includes the Friends Speaker series and other public events, Friends training sessions, Friends celebration and routine staff meetings.
    • The proponent is Ginger Catering and the venue is used primarily to promote the Arboretum, consistent with the Arboretum's Marketing Plan, including:
      • ticketed food-related events that require use of the Conservatory Restaurant only.
      • promotion and showcasing a venue(s) to potential hirers (for example a wedding open day).
      • in these instances Ginger Catering will meet all applicable cleaning costs in addition to the routine cleaning costs normally met by the Arboretum.
    • Fee discounts or waivers for not-for-profit proponents will be considered on a case by case basis upon application to the Executive Manager of the National Arboretum Canberra. Unless otherwise agreed by the Executive Manager and Ginger Catering, the revenue foregone from a fee waiver will be shared pro-rata between Ginger Catering and the Arboretum according to the agreed split of revenue provided for in contractual arrangements.
    • Fee waivers may be exercised in special circumstances with Executive Manager approval where a hirer has not received adequate or reasonable service from the venue (for example if a power failure or mechanical failure renders the venue unusable or other factors significantly negatively impact the function). Such waivers will be exercised in consultation with Ginger Catering.
