100 Forests 100 Gardens
In May 2004 a two-stage design ideas competition was launched by the ACT Government to determine a design and concept for the National Arboretum Canberra. Forty-five entries were received, which were shortlisted to five finalists and assessed by a jury of eminent architects, landscape designers and horticultural experts. On 31 May 2005 Chief Minister Jon Stanhope MLA announced that Taylor Cullity Lethlean Landscape Architects, in conjunction with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects, were the winners with their 100 Forests 100 Gardens concept design.
Jury members Mr Sandy Hollway (Chair), Professor Catherin Bull, Mr David Churches, Mr Romaldo Giurgola, Professor Peter Kanowski, Mr Eric Koundouris, Ms Alex Sloan, and chief advisor to the Jury, Mr Graham Humphries, were unanimous in selecting the design. The plan features 100 forests and gardens, of primarily endangered species, planted across the site. A terrace loop walk will link sections of the arboretum and will feature an illuminated “Crowning Light” sculpture on Dairy Farmers Hill.
